Kayaker running Great Falls at about2.6 - 2.8 feet on the little falls gauge
While the rapids can be fun it is good to know as much as possible about them if you decide to risk your life….

Here is a link to a most excellent  interactive tool that shows the danger of the sometimes placid looking waters below Great Falls of the Potomac River. Kudos to Sohail Al-Jamea, Bonnie Berkowitz, Emily Chow, Laris Karklis and Todd Lindeman for the design and development of this excellent online tool.  Also see and read the related story In the Potomac’s grip: The deceptively placid waters at Great Falls by Steve Hendrix.

Endangered Species Designation Offers Diamond Darter a Chance to Shine On : Wildlife Promise. ”

“It is an honor and a responsibility to have one of the rarest fish in the world surviving in one of our rivers,” says Angie Rosser, executive director of the West Virginia Rivers Coalition (WVRC), which advocated for listing the darter as endangered with critical habitat designation. An affiliate of National Wildlife Federation, WVRC is dedicated to protecting the quality of West Virginia’s water resources and striving to conserve and restore the state’s exceptional rivers and streams. – See more at: http://blog.nwf.org/2013/08/endangered-species-designation-offers-diamond-darter-a-chance-to-shine-on/#sthash.DzXy2oWr.dpuf”

Environmental coalition alleges state environmental agency not protecting the environment

“A new coalition of 18 environmental groups is rallying together with a message highly critical of state environmental regulators in the West Virginia coalfields.

The CARE, or Citizens Action for Real Enforcement, campaign claims that the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection is “failing to protect its citizens from chronic pollution, environmental degradation, human suffering and costs resulting from inadequate regulation of coal extraction by the state government.””  It is asking that the Federal OSM take over the regulation of mining in West Virginia.”
